PAINTING A WOODEN BOAT

The first step in the painting cycle of wooden boats is the priming of the wood with our epoxy protective coating BARRIER, which features great adhesion on wood and an excellent protective power. Sand the dry wooden surface with coarse sand paper (n.80-100), and apply 2-3 coats of BARRIER TIX or TRASPARENTE diluted with 50% of our thinner DILUENTE N.5, until the wood does not absorb any more product and BARRIER appears on the surface. The coats must be applied wet on wet to allow an impregnation in depth. If we let  the first coat dry, this would prevent the absorption of the following coats, rendering the treatment less effective. The painting cycle continues as follows:

HULL

  • Sand the surface with sandpaper n.100-120

  • Apply our EPOXY FILLER if needed and sand the surface

  • Apply one coat of FIBREGLASS PRIMER

  • After 8 hours, apply two coats of SUPER 505, or MARLIN TF, or MAXIMA (waiting 8 hours between coats)

TOPSIDE

  • Sand the surface with sandpaper n.100-120

  • Apply our EPOXY FILLER if needed and sand the surface

  • Apply one or two coats of our epoxy coating EPOPLASTIC AS

  • After at least 24 hours (at 20° degrees, if colder wait at least 48 hours), sand the surface with sandpaper n.240-260

  • Apply two coats of our polyurethanic enamel EVERGLOSS

Our EVERGLOSS enamel can be applied either with a brush or air-spray. If the two coats  are applied between 6 to 8 hours from each other, sanding the surface between them can be avoided. If unsure, wait longer and water sand the surface with very fine sandpaper (n. 240-280).

VARNISHING A WOODEN BOAT

After carefully sanding the wooden surface with medium sandpaper and dusting it, apply wet on wet 2-3 coats of our clear varnish EVERGLOSS TRASPARENTE diluted by 10-20% with our thinner DILUENTE N.4, until the wood does not absorb anymore varnish.

Let it dry for 1 or 2 days and then sand the surface with medium sandpaper (n.120) in order to remove the small wood fibres that the varnish has lifted. It is advisable to hand sand the surface following the natural veins of the wood. However if using an orbital, avoid coarse sandpaper and do not apply too much pressure, to prevent the sand paper from getting gummed and the surface furrowed. It is also important to hand sand all edges, making sure they have been rounded before the application of the varnish. This is because it is quite easy for the varnish to get removed if the edge is very blunt.

Apply another two coats of EVERGLOSS TRASPARENTE without diluting it if treating inside parts, when treating outdoors parts, apply 4 coats of the product. Sanding between the coats can be avoided if the coats are applied within few hours from each other.

The first stage of the treatment can also be carried out using our product BARRIER TRASPARENTE, applying wet on wet two or three coats of this product diluted by 50% with our DILUENTE N.5, until the wood does not absorb the product anymore. The advantage of using BARRIER is that it penetrates more easily and deeply the wooden surface enhancing the colour of the wood.

EVERGLOSS varnish has a UVA filter, which protects the colour of the wood and the integrity of the varnish film.
